Man Equals Man

“Man Equals Man” is a play by the German playwright Bertolt Brecht, written in 1924, almost 100 years later (2023) it was first translated into Ukrainian by Maria Sushko-Bezdenezhnykh.

The work depicts the process of transforming a commoner into an obedient instrument of violence, an element of the war machine.

Having chosen the genre of comedy, the author seems to be simply ridiculing the problem of the dissolution of the individual in the general mass of society, but at the same time, it is impossible not to reveal the depth of the issues raised. Is a person aware of his own individuality and how much does he value it? Do people always understand the causal chain of their actions? Where is the line beyond which the self itself can disappear as such? How important is self-awareness and critical thinking in a world where a person can be changed and transformed depending on circumstances?

So, the action of the work takes place in British India. The main character – Galy Gay, a port loader in Kilkoa, because of his inability to refuse, falls into a whirlwind of events and manipulation, experiences a series of transformations, both physical and psychological, which ultimately leads to the reshaping of his personality as such. The trucker Galy Gay literally becomes another person – the soldier Jeriah Jip.
