The Overcoat

“The Overcoat” – this is an experimental play without words, folowing the same name story by Mykola Hohol.

A story about a single alone man who lives in his closed inner world. For a long time he stay laughingstock for society and stands in one place while his life passes him by.

But suddenly his sad and gray existence finds a sense – a material purpose in the form of an overcoat.

It costs a lot for him, but immediately changes his life: respect arises, new opportunities appear, new friends appear, and everything seems to be getting better, but reality dictates its own rules.

The play “The Overcoat” raises the question of poorness and loneliness, the great importance of status and intolerance in society.

The play “The Overcoat” is a play about nowadays, where the rules are dictated by the “great people”.

About the stage-director:

Artem Vusyk is a young stage-director from Kharkiv who works in the unique genre of Funk-Futurism. He recreates exactly the author’s plot, composing a performance from a kaleidoscope of living pictures that provoke the viewer’s imagination and causes a lot of associations. After the success of his play “Dracula” in Kharkiv and the resonance of his play “Transformation” in Lviv, the Sumy Shchepkin Theater took up the baton of the experimental direction.
